Interning 101| Kate Bigelow

Internships are one of the greatest experiences you can have as a student looking to enter into the world of adulating, as I like to call it. I can honestly say I have learned more from internships and experiences than in class. School gives you the basis we all need entering into our fields, but once you start interning or working is when you really learn and absorb.

Here are my tips and experiences as an intern.

Time

As an intern you sometimes can be SUPER busy and sometimes have all the time in the world, it all depends on your company. I have had internships where I came into work with piles (and I mean piles) of things to do, then sometimes I am continuously refreshing my Instagram feed. It all depends.

So I would suggest using your time wisely, read a lot. Make lists of questions to ask your boss. Look for other internship or career opportunities that might interest you. Whatever it is you want to do, do it.

But know that you most likely will have extra time on your hands and what you put in is what you get out of the internship.

Bug Your Boss

I am really bad at this tip, I’ll be honest, but this really can help you. Bug your boss, ask questions whenever they come up, or at the end of the day go to your boss with a list of questions. You really aren’t bugging them, I promise.

You are there to learn so push for that to happen.

Notes

I am a big believer that writing things down helps you to remember. I tend to take messy notes and a lot of them. So I try to re-write my notes once I am back at my desk.

Sometimes when I am SUPER bored I just re-write them over and over. Eh, It takes up some time.

Webinars

These are super awesome and I am a big fan. Usually big companies have webinars throughout the year for employees, but you can also find these on basically any topic online. I’ve done ones on social media, investments, coding, the list goes on and on.

These are also a great way to kill an hour and actually learns something!

Sometimes pick ones that aren’t necessarily based on your internship but maybe just something you are interested in.

All in all, I have found internships are there to learn about the industry you are in, what it is like in the workplace and ultimately what it is you WANT to do and what it is you DON’T WANT to do.

Hopefully this was helpful!

XOXO Kate
